[July 2024] The Airbnb host in Forio, the second town on the island of Ischia in southern Italy, recommended us to visit Sant’Angelo and Fumarole Beach as the places to go to on this island.
For some reason, I had assumed that Sant’Angelo was a spot to watch the sunset, so we went there late in the afternoon.
First, we took a bus to Sant’Angelo, and then it was supposed to be about a 10-minute walk to the beach.
However, when we got there, we found that it was quite a steep hill, and we decided that it would be difficult for me, as my leg had been in bad shape during the holiday.
So we took a small electric taxi (probably the same as the golf carts at golf courses) we found nearby.
The fare was €10.
It was a short journey, but it was quite a thrill to go up and down steep hills.
On the way, the driver let me take photos at places with good views, and it was quite fun.
He was the one who told us that the best time to see the sunset from Sant’Angelo is around October.
Apparently, you can see it much better from Forio at this time of year.
Then, Fumarole Beach, where we arrived, is famous for being hot.
Apparently, there are spots where the sand temperature reaches 100 degrees, and you can cook on it.
There was a warning sign saying to wear sandals.
But that was it.
I usually wear sandals on the beach anyway, and I actually saw some barefoot people.
I saw glass shards on this small beach, and the sea water was not very clean, probably because of the sand.
Also, it was not shallow, and it got deep quite soon after entering the sea.
On top of that, there were quite a few yachts moored offshore, blocking the view, which was a shame.
Still, I decided to jump in and start breaststroke, but I was in so much pain because of my leg problem that I couldn’t swim.
What a shame.
So I lay down on a deck chair we rented for €10.
But it just so happened that the location was close to the boat dock, so I couldn’t relax.
It is not exactly a dock, but a part of the beach that a boat approaches periodically and people get on and off.
We asked, and found out it was a shuttle boat that travels between the town of Sant’Angelo and this beach.
The last boat was at 6:30, so we got on the one that was just before that.
The fare was €3 per person.
Before I knew it, we were in Sant’Angelo.
The golf cart ride there was probably more fun.
