Though the view was disappointing

[Dec. 2024] During our winter holiday in Sorrento in southern Italy, the wind had finally died down and the weather was decent, so we went to Sant’Agata, which is said to have a good view.

The town’s official name is Sant’Agata Sui Due Golfi, which means “above two bays.”

The town is known for its spectacular views of both the Bay of Naples and the Bay of Salerno.

It is about 20 minutes inland by bus from the front of Sorrento’s train station (€1.50 one way).

We planned so that we would arrive at lunchtime, so we first made a reservation at a restaurant called Da Mimi.

The bus timetable was for a holiday, so there were fewer buses.

We found out that we would arrive late, so my husband contacted the restaurant.

According to my husband, he was told something like, “You’ll arrive when you arrive.”

We were late to a restaurant a few days before, too, and the reaction was exactly the same.

Maybe it’s the local culture.

Or maybe it was because it was empty.

The restaurant had a more modern and stylish interior than I expected.

“We usually have a lot more on the menu, but today is Santo Stefano’s Day,” said the waiter apologetically.

So the menu was limited to what was written on the blackboard.

From that, we shared the antipasto misto (a simple ham and cheese platter) for a starter.

For the main course, I had filetto al pepe verde.

It was a classic hearty meat dish, and it was delicious, but it was so big that I couldn’t finish it.

I gave about a third of it to my husband.

The main course he chose was Ravioli Capresi.

It was cheese ravioli, and he said it was quite rich.

For dessert, we both had a pistachio panettone, which was made here.

Yes, I think this was the best thing.

The pistachio flavour was really strong, and it was delicious and moist.

The other dishes were also good, but not exceeding the expectation.

Including a half litre of house red, the bill was a reasonable €74.50.

After the meal, we headed towards the monastery in search of a view spot, as the waiter had suggested us.

But it was no good.

We could see just the Bay of Naples, but not Salerno, so it wasn’t really a special view.

There seemed to be a better spot if we went by car, but there were no taxis, so we gave up.

So there was no point in going all the way to Sant’Agata other than for the food.

It was not so cold in Sorrento, but Sant’Agata was cold in the highlands, so we went back sooner than planned.

Well, at least the food was good so I would not complain.
