Il Postino, the pride of Procida Island

Il Postino, the pride of Procida Island

[July 2024] On the day of an excursion from the southern Italian island of Ischia to the neighbouring island of Procida, the first place our taxi driver Carlo took us to was the beach where the movie, “Il Postino” was filmed.

Il Postino” is an Italian film from 1994, and neither I nor my husband had seen it, so it didn’t really move us.

I was more shocked at how narrow the roads were to get there.

Almost all of them were one-way, and in fact, in some parts we really just squeezed through the gaps between walls.

Procida is about 4 kilometres around.

The population of this small island is over 10,000, making it the most densely populated island in Europe.

That’s why the houses in the town are so densely packed.

The beach we went to didn’t have any particularly notable features, so it was special just as the film location after all.

My husband said that he knew the title of this film, but he didn’t see it because he didn’t really like the comedian in it.

When I heard that, I thought it was probably a light comedy.

However, I later found out that it was actually a film with a bit more depth.

The people of Procida seemed proud to have been chosen as the location for this film, and they talked about it several times afterwards, too.

One side of the narrow path that descends to this beach was a cemetery.

I guess all the island’s residents are buried there.

Next, we went to a lookout point where we could see the Faraglioni di Procida.

Faraglioni are rocks that stand out from the sea on the island of Capri, not far from here, and there are similar ones in Procida.

It’s smaller and cuter than the one in Capri.

From here, you can see the Aragonese Castle on the island of Ischia across the sea.

We went further to another beach that is said to be the most popular among tourists.

From here, you can see the Faraglioni from the other side.

But Carlo said he doesn’t like this beach because it’s too crowded.

Incidentally, Carlo’s family is apparently the first to hold a taxi license in Procida.

His father, a sailor who has also been to Kobe, was the first to start a taxi business on the island.
