[ July, 2015 ] After walking around the town of Roccella Jonica in Calabria, southern Italy, we went to the beach to relax.
Here, they charged 15 euros for a parasol and two deck chairs.
They also had small huts with locks to hire for changing and to store your belongings, but they all were occupied.
Every time we go to a beach, we worry about the safety of our belongings.
The shop assistant here said that they cannot take responsibility and we hesitated a bit.
At that moment, an old local woman called out and said “Nobody here would touch other people’s things”, which somehow relaxed us, so we decided to stay.
The sea was very calm and warm.
It was lovely to bathe.
There were not so many people, though it was the high season.
The only thing was that, although the water itself was clean and clear, there was some rubbish floating around.
It was not too bad here, but the beach we went to the next day, which was a bit further away, was horrible.
I felt almost as if I was swimming in a rubbish bin.
We heard some people saying that the boats drop their rubbish into the sea around here.
