[ Jan.2016 ] This staircase in the photo is the Selaron Steps in Rio de Janeiro.
A Chilean artist, Jorge Selaron who came to live in Rio in 1983 loved the city and started putting tiles on the stairs in front of his house in 1990.
Earlier in our tour, we saw some colourful steps in Chile, so I wonder if decorating stairs may be a normal thing to do for Chileans.
This staircase has 250 steps and the length is 125 metres.
The wall on the side was red and the surrounding houses were colouful, too.
It was very nice and lively feeling here.
These stairs became popular and famous and more than 2000 tiles were sent from all over the world, so Selaron changed the tiles every now and then.
But in 2013, he was killed here by his pupil.
In fact, it is not the safest area here and our tour leader said “it is said that if you go up more than 30 steps, you would get robbed”.
