View from St.Peter’s Church

[ July2016 ] After leaving our shopping from the market in the hotel, we started sightseeing in the old town of Riga.

First, we visited St.Peter’s Church. The design of the tower is nice and elaborate. They say that this Lutheran church was originally built in the early 13th century. And the tower was rebuilt three times. According to the legend, in 1667, the builders threw a glass from the top of the spire. They believed that the greater the number of shards of the broken glass, the longer life of the building. But this glass fell on a pile of straw and did not break. Sure enough the tower was incinerated a year later.

More recently, after being bombed during WW2, they rebuilt it and performed the same ceremony. This time, the glass was happily broken into small pieces. The height of the tower is 123 metres and the lift took us up to a point 72 metres high. The view from there was fantastic.

After coming back down to the ground, we found another market behind the town hall. We bought mittens and a linen table centerpiece woven by hand here. Before coming around this area, we came across a jewellery shop which makes Latvian traditional charms into accessories. Really, Riga is a shopping paradise.
