[ Jan.2016 ] There is a fine opera house in Buenos Aires called Teatro Colón.
It was very close to our hotel, but unfortunately it was closed for summer, so we joined the tour which showed us the inside of the theatre.
This theatre was opened in 1908.
The marbles of Carrara and Verona in Italy are used inside, but the basic design was more like the Paris Opera.
We sat on one of the 34 seats for honored guests and listened to the guide.
Apparently there used be an area surrounding the round ceiling where some of the orchestra members hid and created special sound effects.
Also, there used to be ‘widow boxes’ on the side of the orchestra stalls and the widows in black sat there so that other people could not see them.
Currently those spaces are used for instruments storage.
On the right hand side of the stage, there is the president’s box and on the left, the mayor’s box.
They sit there so that people can see them rather than they see the stage.
This year, it seems that the season starts at the end of March.
I would like to see a ballet here some day…
