Both horse meat and wine were good choice

[Apr. 2025] Parma, Italy, is a treasure trove of food.

Of the many good restaurants, my husband chose Trattoria Corrieri.

Our relatives who live in Parma also gave it their stamp of approval.

When we went there, we found that it was a casual, large restaurant.

It seems to be a popular place, and it was almost full when we went for lunch.

It was a good idea to make a reservation.

To be honest, we commoners felt much more at home here than at the palace restaurant the day before.

For the starter, we had ham and torta fritta, which are unique to Parma.

Torta fritta is a hollow bread that is almost the same as gnocco fritto, but in the Parma region, it is common to call it torta fritta.

As for the torta fritta at this restaurant, it was bigger than the familiar gnocco fritto and less oily.

I had horse meat for the main course.

Parma is famous for ham and cheese, but horse meat is also a specialty.

There is even a restaurant that specializes in horse meat, and I have been there once.

The dish I had here was called Vecchia di Cavallo, a tomato-flavoured stew of small pieces of meat.

It was very good and easy to eat, a good choice.

My husband had tricolour ravioli, my friend had heavy gnocchi, and another friend had Ravioli in Brodo.

The last one was ravioli in a clear soup simmered in meat and vegetable stock, and my friend aptly said, “It’s like wonton soup.”

As an aside, when we Japanese feel unwell, we eat rice porridge, but I learned while living here that Italians eat Ravioli in Brodo.

The wine we had that day was Gutturnio Superiore, a rich red wine from the local Emilia-Romagna region, which was also a great choice.

However, our friend who had the ‘wonton soup’ was British, so he drank beer.

We had coffee before coming here, so we didn’t have dessert.

It was reasonably priced at €147.50 for four people.

By the way, when I went to the toilet in the basement, I could see the ham storage room.

I was impressed that this is Parma, as expected.
