[ Feb.2015 ] The last place we visited during our mosaic tour in Ravenna in Italy was Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe, which is about 5 km away from the centre of Ravenna.
We could see the bell tower from afar, so we thought this could be it, but the signs were so rare though this is a part of the World Heritage.
In front of the basilica, there was a statue of Caesar who opened the port in Classe.
Inside was spacious.
The 24 pillars are made of Greek marble.
The mosaic behind the altar was the sweetest one among the mosaics we have seen.
St.
Apollinare is standing in the green meadow and many sheep are gathering towards him.
Sheep represents believers.
This basilica was built in the 6th century apparently using the money of a Greek banker.
The area around this basilica will be an archaeology park, but it was empty now.
In the open space, statues of cows scattered in the open space.
It seemed to have been made of copper.
We could not know any reasons for these cows, but we heard some people talking “I can’t believe the city spent as much as 200,000 euros for these.
I heard this sculptor is very close to some of the top managers of the council”.
