Enjoy local food

[Apr. 2025] We went to Esslingen am Neckar from Stuttgart, Germany, where we were staying.

Recently, we’ve always been travelling on a whim, but this time I did a little preparation and made notes on the sights and restaurants.

We arrived in the afternoon, so we had to eat first.

Apparently the cuisine of this region is called Schwäbisch cuisine.

I had made a note of three restaurants that serve this kind of local cuisine, but we found that one of them was about to close.

So we headed straight for the second one, but it was full and we couldn’t get in.

The third one was closed, even though the information online said it should be open.

We were left without a lunch spot.

So we had no choice but to go to a modern restaurant with a poor atmosphere.

In Germany, somehow it seemed like we didn’t need to order a starter, so we ordered the main course right away.

My husband ordered ravioli called Maultaschen, which is said to be a representative of Schwäbisch cuisine.

This was a fairly large ravioli filled with minced meat and spinach.

It looked dense and heavy, but he said it had a light taste.

I also chose the local dish, beef liver.

When the food was served and I was about to start eating the beef, an old lady sitting alone at the table next to us (probably) said, “That’s really delicious. I love it too.”

fried apple, a simple dessert

Unfortunately, neither my husband nor I speak German, so the conversation didn’t go any further.

But it was certainly delicious.

It’s liver, so some people may like it and others may not, but it was perfect for my taste.

I looked it up and found out that it’s a “dish for the common people of this region who hate waste.

We also had half a litre of red wine from the region.

For dessert, my husband and I shared fried apples.

By the way, the old lady next to us was munching down this apple dessert all by herself.

You sometimes see old ladies who are big eaters in Europe.

modern restaurant was in this old building

It reminded me of an old lady I saw in Monza, Italy.

The total bill came to €81.20.

I was surprised when I looked at the receipt, as the restaurant’s name was Kielmeyers Besen, and it was one of the restaurants I was looking for.

Maybe it was an annex or something?

The interior was modern, but the building the restaurant was in seemed to have a long history.
