In Italy, ‘check’ is called ‘quadretti’, meaning small squares.
When an Italian person explained this word to me, she drew a lot of small squares randomly on a piece of paper, so at first I thought it was polka dot with square version.
For them ‘check’ is a pattern with a lot of squares and not two lines, horizontal and vertical, crossing in the right angle.
