[ Jan.2015 ] The next place we visited in Hoi An in Vietnam was a house built in the early 19th century.
It was a house of a merchant called Tan Ky.
The frontgate was narrow but the length of the house was long.
People in the tour said that the structure is similar to the houses in Kyoto, Japan ( I must go there and see).
There was a courtyard in the middle.
On a pillar, there was a hanging of a Chinese poem whose characters were all made of shells and when I looked at it closely, I saw that each character was made up by bird figures.
This house seemed very popular among tourists and there were so many people there and we felt hurried up, so I could not see everything.
Later I found in my guide book that there was a pillar showing the water level of the floods.
Apparently Hoi An often get flooded.
As recent as 2013, they had a great flood.
Mr.
Hai, our guide was rather relaxed about that, saying ” When Hoi An get flooded, it becomes Venice in Asia”.
